I realize this is a book about Absurdism, but does that mean it needs to be printed all wonkadoo? It starts on pageand then jumps to page 19 somewhere about a quarter through and then repeats itself. Who printed this? If this is on purpose, I love it but somehow I doubt that you screwed up my plane reading.
Images in this review. There is nothing to dislike - this is Albert Camus - If he has written it, most should have the desire to read it. It takes place every day. My favorite chapter of The Myth of Sisyphus is the first, in which Camus diagnoses the existential position of man in the cosmos as absurd.
On the one hand we grasp for meaning, we grasp for knowledge, completeness, control. On the other hand, the universe defies our attempts at knowledge, meaning, completion and control. The gap between our sense-grasping nature and the senselessness of the world Camus dubs the Absurd. And, my two cents, he's pretty much right, and describes it pretty well. His conclusions on what to do about it are a bit confused and come without much foundation though. I agree we should live with it, but the only argument he gives for that is because life is more full if we dare look it square in the face and don't deny the realities we're given.
Sure, the absurd rules out objective values and an objective compass, but why does this mean that what Camus styles "the most living" all of a sudden is dictated? The chapters on the Absurd Man, Absurd Creation and Sisyphus likewise fail to satisfy, though containing interesting discussions to varying degrees. In summary, a good book for anyone who wants to come face to face with humanity's place in the world, a good book for anyone who needs to hear that there's no solution, albert camus the myth of sisyphus and other essays, a bad book for anyone interested in a sensible argument about what to do as we live without that solution.
This book is beautifully written with passages that will truly stir your heart and paint vivid pictures of the concepts being expressed. Furthermore, it is an important work for anyone who has found themselves searching for meaning in the chaos we call life. And therein lies the heart of the work itself. For me, it was an important read at the right time in my life.
Very finely put together view of the world, as the absurd spectacle it is. Madness viewed from within the existence au solitaire of a modern human being cast out into the abyss that is umwelt. Albert Camus, brilliant scribe and thinker, left at a far too young age. Gone but never forgotten. Undoubtedly a masterpiece, read it.
Interesting analysis of the absurd "This world in itself is not reasonable, that is all that can be said. But what is absurd is the confrontation of this irrational and the wild longing for clarity whose call echoes in the human heart. The absurd depends as much on man as on the world.
