Murdocks view is general of the whole perspective of functionalism so you can use it to just elaborate on the perspective in the introduction. Parsons argues that the functions in which the family perform depends upon the kind of society in which it is found. They further argue that the nuclear family fits the needs of industrial society, and is the dominant family type within that society, whilst the extended family fits the needs of pre-industrial society. In Parsons view, f rom the late 18th century onwards, the extended family began to give way to the nuclear due to the different needs required in industrial society.
He argues that industrial society has two essential needs: a geographically mobile workforce, and a socially mobile workforce. Geographically mobile workforce: industries constantly grow and decline, requiring people to move to where the jobs are, thus creating a geographically mobile workforce, rather than in pre-industrial society where people worked and lived in the same village. Socially mobile Workforce: M odern industrial society is based on constantly evolving science and technology, and so it requires a skilled workforce, therefore it is essential that talented people are able to get promotions and take on the most important jobs, thus status is achieved through ability, rather than class background, creating a socially mobile workforce.
